Overview
Houston Endowment supports initiatives that build toward a livable community
with a healthy, sustainable environment.
Healthy, attractive surroundings are essential to a good quality
of life. Achieving a balance between needs of
the environment and the economy is critical if a community is to develop, attract and retain a
workforce of well-educated, highly skilled, environmentally conscious and
engaged citizens.
The greater Houston area offers an increasing array of well-conceived parkland
and
a network of waterways and wetlands that provide flood control and recreation
opportunities, as well as seven distinct ecosystems with a wide variety of
plants, aquatic life and wildlife.
However, the region’s rapid growth, land use practices and major industries
present environmental challenges that are compounded by its geography and
climate.
