We never want
to lose the sense of being open and personal, but we know that to
truly fulfill our mission, we must become a more structured organization.
Staying close to our audience and our vision while becoming more
financially stable and better equipped for growth is our biggest
challenge.
— The Orange Show Foundation
Small and midsize arts organizations enrich life and add flavor
to the communities they serve, but often they struggle to survive,
especially as they grow. Many organizations begin with a vision
and are operated by dedicated volunteers; on occasion, a paid staff
member serves simultaneously as artistic director, fund-raiser,
manager and advertising agent. Stable organizations require active
boards, trained staff, engaged volunteers, reliable and diverse
sources of funds and effective marketing. Frequently, scarce resources
prevent new and small organizations from growing, but they are more
likely to succeed if developing a sound, efficient infrastructure
is part of their budget and in their plans for the future.
