Whether they’re used for finding a job or learning in school,
computer skills have become as important as reading and writing.
However, only 12 percent of low-income families know how to use
the Internet compared to nearly two-thirds of more affluent families
who own and regularly use computers. This inequity diminishes employment
and educational opportunities, influences an individual’s
ability to participate fully in today’s world and perpetuates
poverty for those without access to the tools they need to compete
successfully. Teaching skills to those who can’t afford computers
or to children who don’t have access to them at school increases
chances for academic success, gainful employment and upward mobility,
and helps eradicate the disparities in education and employment
between poor and more affluent citizens.
