  Preserving Land

American Festival for the Arts
The Trust for Public Land

We recommit ourselves to protecting the places that people cherish: trails where our families can walk together, the integrity of a working farm or ranch, the natural areas where the silence is broken only by the whispering of wildlife.

— Land Trust Alliance, Inc.

Every day Texas loses approximately 164 acres of wildlife habitat, farmland and coastal area to commercial development. Of the 172 million acres in Texas, less than 6 percent is available for public use, with slightly more than one-half of 1 percent in the state park system. Through direct acquisition and conservation agreements with landowners and public agencies, organizations are preserving large bioregions of the state to protect natural resources, sensitive habitat and vulnerable wildlife, and to provide expansive public outdoor places for recreation and renewal.

To sustain the state’s unique plant and animal biodiversity, and to provide open space for the people of Texas, Houston Endowment has supported:

. American Farmland Trust

. The Conservation Fund - A Nonprofit Corporation

. Gulf Coast Bird Observatory Inc.

. International Crane Foundation

. Katy Prairie Conservancy

. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

. Land Trust Alliance, Inc.

. National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

. The Nature Conservancy of Texas

. The Texas Coalition for Conservation

. Texas Urban Forestry Council Inc.

. The Trust for Public Land

. Valley Land Fund Inc.
