One out of every
three Houston children below age six doesn’t have enough food
to eat.
— End Hunger Network Houston Chapter
More than one-quarter of Houston's
children live in poverty, and according to the Texas Department
of Human Services, 250,000 of them go to bed hungry at night. Food
is not affordable for thousands of destitute individuals and working
poor families, even when both parents work or one has two jobs.
Reduced federal, state and local budgets and the slowing economy
have increased the responsibilities of organizations that procure,
prepare and deliver food, whether door-to-door or to shelters, rehabilitation
centers and food pantries. Regular meals sometimes lead the indigent
from dependency to self-sufficiency, and they always help children
succeed in school and in life.
