Within our grasp is the very real potential to cure and prevent infection and disease—to save lives and enhance human well-being.

Forty percent of United States citizens will develop cancer, and half of them will die from the disease. More than 60 million Americans suffer from cardiovascular disease, with coronary heart disease being the leading cause of death in the nation, while stroke ranks third. The smallest amount of change or damage to a gene, which regulates cell growth through thousands of DNA molecules, can cause dangerous cells to develop and grow. Identifying and manipulating the thousands of molecules within a specific gene can stop disease before it advances beyond the cellular level. Through research, new genetic structures, molecular processes and technologies are being discovered that have the potential to prevent and cure a variety of deadly diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune disorders.

To help identify the cause and prevention of disease at the molecular level, Houston Endowment has supported:

. Baylor College of Medicine

. Rice University

. The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center

. The University of Texas – Houston Health Science Center
