Expanding community-centered pathways to the classroom

In an effort to strengthen the region’s educator workforce, Houston Endowment grantee Edwell is expanding its registered teacher apprenticeship programs across Greater Houston. This work aims to build accessible and sustainable career pathways into the teaching profession, especially for those who are unable to pursue traditional certification routes.

With support from Houston Endowment, Edwell will lead a collaborative effort bringing together school districts, educator preparation programs, and local workforce partners to create employer-driven pipelines that merge high-quality preparation with hands-on classroom experience. These apprenticeships offer aspiring educators paid, practice-based learning experiences that pave the way to full certification and long-term careers in education.

“Our goal at Edwell is to build systems that give school districts sustainable, employer-driven talent solutions—while creating clear pathways for aspiring educators, especially those for whom traditional routes have been out of reach,” said Kristi Kirschner, President of Edwell. “This investment affirms both the urgency and the promise of the apprenticeship model to reshape how we—together with Houston-area school districts—develop future educators.”

The grant reflects Houston Endowment’s broader commitment to public education and the workforce. By investing in apprenticeship programs, particularly at a time when more than half of new teachers in Texas enter classrooms uncertified, the foundation aims to ensure that every student is taught by a well-prepared, committed educator.

“We’re proud to support Edwell’s work to expand community-driven pathways into teaching,” said Ann B. Stern, President and CEO of Houston Endowment. “Apprenticeship programs have the potential to make the teaching profession more accessible and resilient by equipping educators with the tools and support they need to succeed from day one.”

The timing of this initiative aligns with momentum at the state level, including House Bill 2 (HB2), which supports programs that encourage high school students and community members to pursue teaching careers. Edwell’s model integrates elements of Grow Your Own, traditional certification, and residency programs, offering a scalable, cohesive approach responsive to each district’s needs.
